Naming What Was Overlooked: Black Trauma

As people of color, we were taught to be tough, and the rules from our ancestors became the ground rules instilled in us. We heard the word “trauma” and experienced it across generations, but “Black trauma” was not something society around us named or held with care. Now, in my era, it’s talked about a little more openly, but still not fully understood, which means the necessary, effective tools are not always easy to find. That’s when I began creating my own tools—to first cope, then survive, and eventually, to thrive.
